The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is setting up India’s first Centre of Excellence in Intelligent Internet of Things (IoT) sensors in Kochi. The Digital University Kerala (DUK) in association with the Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (C-MET), an autonomous scientific society under MeitY, will establish the Centre of Excellence (CoE).
Funds Allocation
MeitY has accorded approval for Rs. 41 crore for the CoE, which also receive support from the Kerala Start-up Mission.
The Ministry, along with the State Industries Department will fund the project. It will be a first-of-its-kind integrated facility for sensor manufacturing and indigenous development of IoT products in India. This project automatically gains significance against the disrupted supply chain of electronic components due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Role of Atmanirbhar Bharat
Announcing the CoE, DUK vice-chancellor said, “As part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat Mission, there is a need for indigenization of a substantial amount of electronic components. This includes sensors that are an integral part of the industry.”
Facilities in Centre for Excellence (COE)
According to the University officials, the COE will have state-of-the-art facilities for sensor manufacturing, intelligent sensor system hardware, AI Software development and so on. The centre will also host an incubation facility for companies starting up in IIoT sensors and promote innovation and entrepreneurship.
