Hyderabad deploys AI-based tools to track and fine mask violators
In a recent update, facial recognition technology will now be used not only on your face but also to check whether you are wearing a mass or not. Hyderabad has deployed AI-based tools to track mask violators and penalize them. The three commissionerates which have ramped up the enforcement are Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda.
Hyderabad Authorities are using AI-based tools to track mask violators and enforce stricter enforcement of mandatory masks in public. The police are employing artificial intelligence (AI) and surveillance cameras to track down people who are not wearing masks, and then dispatching mobile patrols to the region to approach such individuals. Apart from penalising careless behaviour, the authorities force them to wear masks.
This system was first used in May 2020 with only 335 AI-enabled cameras. By using deep learning techniques linked to surveillance cameras, the authorities plan to enforce the mask rule. An article by Medianama now reports that around 2,000 CCTV cameras are AI-enabled under the Greater Hyderabad area.
Earlier this week, Director-General of Police M Mahendar Reddy gave instructions to authorities to strictly enforce the mask rule. In the last few weeks around 10,000 Covid-19 mask violations have been identified. However, officials say that the major objective of this drive is not to impose a penalty, but to create awareness to wear a mask.
