drone based vaccine delivery

Dunzo has announced that it will start delivery of medicines through drones. It will do so under the ‘Medicine from the Sky’ project launched by the Telangana government in collaboration with the World Economic Forum.

Last month, The Ministry of Civil Aviation had granted conditional exemption for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) experimental flights of drones. The Ministry had received 34 Expression of Interest (EoI) for the experimental flights. Dunzo Air Consortium was one of the applicants.

Details about the Project

The Government of Telangana had launched the Medicine from the Sky project to ensure delivery of essentials, including medicines and vaccines to counter the challenges posed by infrastructure and lockdowns.

The project is aimed to enable emergency medical deliveries that could include COVID-19 vaccines and other essentials. As per Gadgets 360, the drone delivery system will focus on an end-to-end ecosystem for drone-based logistic transportation. It will utilize the existing logistics network of Telangana to enable medical supplies in different districts of the state.

The delivery company further said that it was working to start drone deliveries as soon as it receives approval from the local authorities.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation had invited expression of interest to conduct experimental BVLOS operations, from Consortia of Experts. Each consortium must consist of RPAS operators Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems), UTM operator (Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management), supplementary service providers, and agencies for data acquisition, data analysis, safety case development and preparation of POC.

Further, each consortia shall be lead by a Project Coordinator, who must be an Indian citizen and must have at least two years’ experience in RPAS operations.
